Weezer - Ok Human (Album review)

Image
What more can be said about Weezer’s discography? After releasing two of the most cherished albums of all time the band have since seemed fairly content releasing what most would agree is straight up garbage. They’re a band that means a lot to me personally with The Blue Album and Pinkerton being two of my all-time favourite albums. Pinkerton especially would sit pretty comfortably in my top ten albums ever released. It’s hard to tell whether Weezer are self-aware or not; do Rivers and company know that they’re dropping trash, or are they deluded enough to believe they’re dropping great albums? Self-aware or not the bands last two full length original albums, The Black Album and Pacific Daydream are up there with the worst music the band have ever dropped, sounding more like 5 Seconds of Summer than any credible alternative rock band. Sadly, Ok Human is a continuation of Weezer’s terrible form, the name which is most likely a reference to Radiohead’s classic album Ok Computer draws

Shame - Drunk Tank Pink (Album review)

When shame dropped their debut album Songs of Praise back in 2018, it was generally pretty well received. The energy and aggressive nature of the band made them one of the most prominent names in the modern post punk scene. Personally I didn’t love Songs of Praise, whilst the song writing was generally pretty good across the album; I felt that Shame really struggled to nail their own sound and lean too heavy on their own influences but that being said, there are some pretty decent songs on the band’s debut. Thankfully, I think Drunk Tank Pink is for the most part a better album than Songs of Praise. Featuring a more varied selection of tracks, Drunk Tank Pink is a lot less one note and you can see the band are at least trying to develop their sound to an extent. Drunk Tank Pink is sadly still guilty of the same issues the debut had, Shame are still wearing their influences very much on their own sleeve, though this time they have a new selection of bands to imitate. The album at time

Circa 2000 - Impact Driver Download (Track review)

Image
Impact Driver Download is the ambitious new single from Brighton based songwriter and producer William Wiffen. On his new track, released under his Circa 2000 moniker, Wiffen continues to push boundaries with his signature blend of techno, ambient, electronica and pop. Released via Simonie Records, Impact Driver Download is the first single of a three part multimedia release that tackles the concept of how technology is increasingly intruding on our day to day lives. The series of tracks also features a corresponding art installation website, which together with the music, creates a truly unique audio / visual experience. You can visit the art installation  here . As Impact Driver Download begins you are first greeted with a menacing drone sound which then quickly dissolves into a spacey techno beat, similar to something you would hear on Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85 – 92. The track cleverly builds up a haunting atmosphere which is complimented by the brilliant vocal work f

Viagra Boys - Welfare Jazz (Album review)

Image
After storming onto the music scene with their 2018 debut album Street Worms, Sweden’s very own Viagra Boys are back with the albums follow up Welfare Jazz. The singles the band released in the run up to the new album showed that the band looked to be slightly moving away from the straight up bass driven punk tracks of their debut. Welfare Jazz takes the sounds the band established on their debut and pushes its limits; it’s somehow less punk orientated but even more manic than what we saw from the band on Street Worms. The new album is packed to the brim with chaotic instrumentations, jazz interludes and deranged crooning courtesy of the bands lead singer Sebastian Murphy. Welfare Jazz contains a larger variation of genres than the band’s debut which at times works in their favour and at times is their own worst enemy, with some tracks being almost nu wave and others bordering on a more country sound. The album really seems to excel when on the tracks that are a little more out there a
